Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Building

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 23rd Street, 26
 office building, 1850s construction

6-story office building originally completed in 1853 as a 4-story rowhouse for William F. Earle. By 1885 it had a cast-iron facade. The storefront was altered several times during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Napoleon Lebrun & Son did interior renovations in 1887. The Daby Company hired architect Harry Hurwitz to erect a new terra-cotta facade, a rooftop addition, and a rear extension in 1919.

The 2-story base, composed of paneled side piers and a recently covered paneled spandrel, frames a modern 2-story storefront with canopy, sign board, and three fixed metal-framed windows above. The remaining floors contain various arrangements of fixed and pivoting aluminum-framed replacement windows in bands. The crenelated parapet has Tudor Revival style details.

Early tenants included Venetian Iron Work, James M. Shaw, pottery, glass, and china; Theodore Haviland, china; Madam Mays, beauty treatments; MacDonald-Heyward Company, diamonds, Masonic goods, and watches; Hulbert Brothers, saddles and bicycles; and a corset company. The ground floor is occupied by a Verizon wireless store.
