 office building, 1850s construction

5-story office building originally completed in 1857 as brownstone-fronted townhouse for George F. Jones, the father of novelist Edith Wharton, who was born in this house. In 1882. Henry J. Hardenbergh was commissioned to alter the lower two floors for commercial use and upper three floors for "gentlemen's apartments". A white cast-iron front was added by architect George H. Budlong for owners F.P. and H.E. Jones in 1892; the upper floors were converted from apartments to lofts. Alterations in 1907, designed by Henry C. Pelton for successful linen merchant James McCutcheon, lessee, consisted of a new storefront and new 2nd-floor windows, which are still extant.

Each of the 2nd through 5th floors contains five wood-framed windows flanked by pilaster strips. The 2nd-floor windows are surmounted by multi-paned transoms. A white cast-iron modillioned cornice surmounts the facade.

The ground floor is occupied by a Starbucks coffee.
