 office building, 1928_construction

6-story office building completed in 1928. Designed by J. Eckmann, it was built as offices and showrooms for the Cornell Holding Company. Early tenants included the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank. It is faced in light-colored cast stone, organized into three bays. Parts of the ground-floor storefront date from the storefront alteration of 1940. The windows in each bay are wood-framed, in a tripartite format with wood mullions. Paneled cast-stone spandrels separate the floors within each bay. Four piers rise from the belt course under the 2nd floor terminating in small capitals at the 6th floor, supporting a simple projecting cornice, surmounted by a paneled parapet. The ground floor is occupied by Eisenberg's Sandwich, and State & Liberty Clothing, with Bluarch on the 2nd floor. Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop on Fifth Avenue across the street from the Flatiron Building has been in business since 1929. It was founded by Carl Eisenberg and it hasn't changed much since then--an unparalleled Old New York experience.
