office building, 1890s construction
5-story office condominium building originally completed in the 1890s, but almost completely rebuilt since. It was the site of one of the first Brooks Brothers stores. In the 1930s, the structure was converted into a commercial loft building with an early International style facade. The building later housed a hardware store for several decades. It was drastically remodeled again and converted to commercial condominiums sometime after 2005, with a prominent rounded corner.
The ground floor is painted grey. At the south end of the Broadway facade the main entrance is recessed between two pairs of silver steel columns with a polished granite base. There are storefronts to the north, wrapping around the corner; toward the east end of the 22nd Street elevation, there is a large vent, and further east, the end section of the building is set back for its full height of five floors, with a freight entrance. The rest of the base is capped by an inverted metal cornice.
The set back section is faced in grey stone, with a bay of double-windows in the center, flanked by a single-window on the right (west) and vents on the left. A black glass tower projects forward at the corner and connects to the main facade. On the 22nd Street side, it is faced in light-grey painted pre-cast concrete, seven bays wide. From east to west, the bays consist of: a square opening with a large square window pane at the upper left and smaller panes to the right and bottom; a smaller bay of two narrow windows separated by a silver metal rounded column; a square opening with a mirror-image of the windows in the first bay; a square opening with a silver metal rounded columns nestled against the left edge, and window panes to the right; two bays of double-windows, and one bay that begins a black glass curtain wall crawling up the facade and adding one more bay in width with each floor (the glass curtain wall is four bays wide at the top floor). Each bay is capped by an inverted metal cornice at the level that the curtain wall takes over.
The corner bay is rounded, with four panes of black glass windows per floor. On the Broadway side, each floor above the base has a band of metal-framed windows divided into four wide bays by silver metal round columns. There is a small penthouse level at the center of the roof. The southwest corner of the roof supports an advertising billboard.
The ground floor is occupied by The Box Store, and Eklund/Gomes real estate.
