Chicago Railway Equipment
The company was founded in 1887 by Edward B. Leigh, and was a descendant of the National Hollow Brake Beam Company. During its first 20 years, this firm sold over six million brake beams. Though the company was founded in Chicago, it was actually incorporated and ultimately declared bankrupt in Dane County, Wisconsin.
Lewis Hall Motor Corp
In 1915, the Lewis Hall Iron Works, a structural steel firm located at Ferry Avenue and the Grand Trunk Railway, became interested in manufacturing a truck. By 1920, a separate facility was needed and the former Chicago Railway Equipment was purchased. By 1922, the company was bankrupt and the plant was sold by the receiver.
