The Detroit Produce Terminal was constructed in 1928 by the Wabash, Pere Marquette and Pennsylvania Railroads to permit the three railway lines to distribute produce more efficiently at a time when most produce was shipped by rail. Building A, located along West Fort Street is a two story, reinforced concrete building, 70 feet by 1,040 feet. Building B of similar design measured 70 feet by 633 feet. A third, one story building, known as the Banana Building was built next to Building B and was used primarily to ripen bananas.
At one time entire trains of refrigerated cars carrying produce would line up in the rail yard located south of Building B.(presently used for truck parking). The yard was known as the "Garden Yard" as it was where all the cars carrying salad ingredients were mixed up. Over time the rails became disused and were torn up and most produce now arrives by truck.
