De Vinne Press Building (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Lafayette Street, 393-399
office building, Romanesque (architecture), NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, 1886_construction

8-story Romanesque-revival office building originally completed in 1886 for Theodore L. De Vinne, with a matching addition facing East 4th Street in 1890-91. Designed by Babb, Cook & Willard as a printing house, a function it served until 1968 when it was converted to an office building. The lower level housed a branch of Manhattan Savings Bank.

It is clad in red brick above a low stone base, with seven bays on Lafayette Street, and eleven on East 4th. There are many round-arched openings of different sizes with recessed windows, including three very large 3-story arches at the center of the Lafayette side, at the 1st-3rd and 5th-7th floors. There are also segmental-arched openings, including all of the windows on the 4th floor. The southwest corner is rounded, with terra-cotta quoins; other quoins are also found in various locations. The openings above the 3rd floor have many-paned industrial windows. The top floors has an arcade of small round-arched windows below a low-pitched gable facing Lafayette Street. There is a metal fire escape at the east end of the 4th Street facade.

The ground floor is occupied by Astor wine & spirits.
