Founded November 14, 1851, to protect the western movement of Europeans from the Comanches. Abandoned by the military November, 1853, subsequently a stagecoach stop on the Butterfield Overland route. Reoccupied by the Confederate Army, then after the Civil War, by the U.S. Army again to oppose the Native Americans. Became a city of 545 people 1875 - c. 1895, when finally abandoned.
