City with a population of 551,789 in 2008; largest city in Oklahoma. State capital and county seat of Oklahoma County. Settled in 1889 when the Oklahoma Territory was formed and opened to white settlement. By statehood it was the largest city in Oklahoma, and became state capital in 1910. Grew as the result of the discovery of oil in the city in 1928. In 1995 the city was the site of the Oklahoma City Bombing, in which Timothy McVeigh, an extremist American nationalist, exploded a bomb outside the Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people: At the time, the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States.
