This townsite was first settled in 1876, and in 1881 the Great Northern Railroad built a station in the southwest quarter of section 4-140-53, Wheatland Township just southeast of Absaraka. A townsite was platted and great progress was predicted, but the site was found to drain poorly, and most settlers moved to Absaraka. A post office was established March 8, 1882 with John A. Smith as Postmaster, closing January 15, 1895 with mail to Absaraka. The townsite was officially abandoned in 1890. Edgar L. Sears, the town's founder, named it for his hometown of Ripon, Wisconsin, which was named for Ripon, West Yorkshire, England. Others claim it was named directly for the English city.
