 apartment building  Add category

6-story tenement building completed in the late 1800s. It has the typical dumbbell-shape plan of tenements of its era, designed to allow light into the building. When 6th Avenue was widened, the neighboring building to the east was demolished, exposed the eastern facade of this building. It received a new 1-story entrance extension on 6th Avenue in the mid-1900s. The eastern walls are clad in tan brick, with a metal coping along the roof. The building's former front, facing Vandam Street, is clad in red brick, with brownstone window sills and lintels, and a black metal roof cornice with brackets and modillions. There are also black-painted carved panels in the spandrels between the windows. An iron fire escape runs down this facade.
