Chase Bank (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / Broadway, 407
 bank, Neoclassical (architecture)

2-story Neoclassical bank building completed in 1927. Designed by Archibald F. Gilbert for the Manufacturers Trust Company, with a neo-Classical limestone facade and a prominent clock above the entrance, set below a large round-arch framed in marble. Four large stone pilasters are capped by Ionic capitals, and above a dentiled stone cornice, the roof is capped by a stone parapet with balustrades. Gilbert avoided the popular Art Deco style, choosing instead to impart a feeling of stability and assurance to the banking customers with a neo-Classical facade.

Manufacturers Trust Company became Manufacturers Hanover in 1981. The Broadway branch was one of 14 throughout Manhattan at the time. The name changed again in 1993 when it became Chemical Bank. It now houses a Chase Bank branch.
