The building was constructed in 1909 for the Praetorian Order, a fraternal insurance company based in Dallas, and is regarded as the first skyscraper in Texas. It remained the tallest building in Dallas until 1912. It is also classified as the first skyscraper to be constructed in the Southwestern United States.

Unoccupied since 1993, various plans for redevelopment were proposed, but none ever came to fruition. The building has been slated for demolition by the city of Dallas since 2012.
