The Westmore

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 57th Street, 333
 cooperative, apartment building

8-story Art-Deco cooperative-apartment building completed in 1940. Designed by Boak & Paris, it consists of two buildings, one on 57th Street and one on 58th, with a garden courtyard in between, connected by a narrow passageway. Both buildings are clad in light-grey brick with white metal window framing.

The north building has four projecting bays with angled sides; each of these bays have a triple-window at the front and narrow double-indows on the angled facets, all with lower transom panes. Between the two middle projecting bays are two narrow double-windows; between the middle and end projecting bays on both sides are three narrow double-windows, and the end bays have two joined double-windows; except for the two center windows, these all also have lower transom panes. The windows at the ground floor have white metal grilles. At the 2nd projecting bay from the east is the main entrance for the north building, with glass-and-aluminum double-doors and sidelights framed by red polished granite pillars, and topped by a silver metal canopy. The projecting bays end just below the roof line, topped by low metal railings.

The south building is slightly wider. It also has four projecting bays with angled sides, with the remaining bays very slightly set back above the ground floor, which is capped by a stone coping. There is a central main entrance with glass double-doors set in a metal-and-glass surround, itself framed by a fluted stone surround with a pair of wall sconces. A grey-and-gold metal canopy cover the doors, surmounted by a fluted stone entablature with Art-Deco ornament. On either side of the entrance is a window group of two pairs of bay windows with narrow angled sides recessing into the wall, with white metal framing; the windows group itself is framed in a beveled white stone molding with a rounded white stone column between the two bay windows. Further out, the ground floor has black metal-and-glass storefronts, and a metal service door at the west end.

Above the ground floor, there are three narrow double-windows in the middle section, alternating with two bays of slightly-larger joined double-windows with lower transom panes. Between the two east projecting bays and between the two west projecting bays are three narrow double-windows with lower transom panes. The end bays also have joined double-windows. Above the top-floor windows there are oculus windows at the bays between the projecting bays, and a stone coping marks the roof line. Like the north building, the projecting bays end just below the roof line, with short metal railings.

The complex was converted to a cooperative in 1991, and contains 170 apartments. The ground floor on 57th Street is occupied by Nick Sarah Salon, Apothecary NYC pharmacy, Chenille Cleaners & Tailors, Uni K Wax hair removal, and Quest Diagnostics.
