Baqirha

Syria / Idlib / ad-Dana / Syria
basilica, ruins, archeological site, byzantine, historic ruins

Byzantine-era settlement on the northern side of Jebel Barisha was also a regional economic center based mainly on the export of oliveoil. Remains of two basilicas can be found: one in the east dated 546 AC, quite well preserved, and one in the west, beginning 6th century and a baptisterium from 501 AC: obviously the settlement reached its peak in the 6th century AC, like the whole region. But the temple of Zeus Bombos, overlooking the settlement up the mountain, gives a hint that Baqirha existed already centuries earlier.
