The Idlib area is the largest region in western Syria under control of insurgent groups fighting against the government in Damascus. It consist of most of Idlib Governorate except for Sinjar, Abu adh-Dhuhur and part of the At-Tamanah subdistricts. The Idlib area also consist of some parts of the neighboring governorates of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.

The size and extent of the area has been steadily evolving since 2013. Sometimes it has moved in favor of the insurgents, such as when the large government held Idlib city salient was captured in mid 2015., but since then it has been steadily evolving in favour of the Syrian government. The area was separated from the northern Aleppo countryside in February 2016. In September 2016 the eastern part of Aleppo city was besieged by the government which resulted in its full capture in December. In January 2018, the eastern third of the pocket was lost to the Syrian government and ISIS.In late March, this area has been reconnected to northern Aleppo countryside by takeover of Afrin region.
