apartment building, 1911_construction
8-story residential building competed in 1911 as a hotel. Designed by Schwartz & Gross , it opened as the Cambria Hotel. It is clad in brown brick with limestone trim, and shaped in an H-plan, with light courts at the middle of the north and south facades (deeper at the south facade, where the main entrance is).
The entry at the rear of the light court has a glass door set in a projecting glass surround with angled panes; it is topped by a white stone entablature that also has angled sides. Above the entrance the rear wall has two bays of double-windows. The side walls of the south light court have four bays of single-windows with an additional bay of small bathroom windows inserted behind the southernmost bay. Each of the two wings created by the light court have a central double-window bay flanked by narrow single-windows, and end bays with tripartite windows. All of the windows have projecting, white stone sills, and the tripartite and double-windows have black iron mullions. The base of the building is beige-painted stone, with a few very low, wide openings with iron grilles and a caged stairway down to a basement door at the west end.
The lower two floors are banded in brick, and at the ground floor there are stone panels with egg-and-dart molding outlines bearing wall lanterns to either side of the light court. A broad stone band course, fluted at the top edge, caps the 2nd floor. At the 4th floor the end bays of the two wings are fronted by wrought-iron railings that appear to have been added later, due to the mis-matching brick around them. The 7th floor has a thin band course below the windows and a wider one at the top, matching the one above the 2nd floor. Above the 8th-floor windows on the two wings are rounded stone pediments with ample stone ornament, including cartouches. Just above these there are brickwork patterns of diagonal criss-crosses and staggered roof lines with stone copings.
The building contains 96 apartment units.
