high-rise, apartment building, 1964_construction, commercial building, Modern (architecture)

178-foot, 19-story mid-century Modern residential building completed in 1964. Designed by Herbert Fleischer Associates, it is clad in brick, tan at the piers and beige at the spandrels, above a ground floor lined with metal-and-glass storefronts along the avenue. The north elevation of the ground floor is clad in black polished granite, with a storefront return at the east end and tan brick at the west end. The southernmost storefront is also clad in various shades of tan cobbled stone. Most of the rest of the ground floor on the south elevation has black granite again, but with six bays of four tall window panes. The west end is brick, with a metal service door. The main entrance is at the center of the east facade, with glass doors framed by beige marble, and covered by a rounded, black canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk.

The upper floors have 16 bays along the avenue. There are three bays on the north facade, and eight bays on the south facade, including the western end bay that takes up the shorter, 12-story section on the west end, recessed back slightly on the north and south sides. Each bay has a tripartite windows with 2-over-1 panes at the ends, and large middle panes. Very small vents are located below each window group.

The top three floors are recessed on the north, east, and south sides. The rear, west-facing elevation has a bay of triple-windows at the north end, followed by a bay of small single-windows, and then 10 more bays of triple-windows, to where the south end juts out to the west and has two bays of small single-windows (plus a bay of triple-windows above the 12th-floor setback). The eight northern bays set back above the 12th floor, while the rest extend straight up to the roof line. Above the setback, some of the triple-window bays are replaced by small single-windows.

The building contains 202 apartment units. The ground floor is occupied by Westerly Natural Market, Nail Stage, Rostelle Shoe Repair, a wine & spirits store, Barcelona Bar, and Seed Cleaners.
