apartment building, commercial building
6-story modernist/Italianate residential building originally completed as a 4-story tenement in 1901, matching the one directly to the south. In 2006 the existing facade was incorporated into new construction, designed by David Winston, built above it and to the north in a wildly contrasting modern style, giving rise to the nickname, The Tetris Building. The new building cradles the old brick structure, wrapping underneath up the side and over the top, fusing the two buildings together.
At the ground floor, the main entrance is at the south end, with a glass door, sidelight, and transom; to the north is a storefront faced in wood and glass with two large segmental-arches. Above the entrance and southern arch of the storefront is the original facade, clad in red-painted smooth-stucco, with four bays of single-windows. Each has a black metal arched cornice and bracketed black stone sills. A black metal fire escape runs down the middle two bays, with the 4th-floor landing extending to the north, and up to a balcony created above the original facade's black metal roof cornice. The cornice has brackets, modillions, and panels.
The new construction is dark-grey metal and green-tinted glass, extending for a bay north of the old facade, and rising two floors above it as well for two bays. Each bay has a smaller double-window and lower transom (with thin white metal framing) inserted between the larger north pane and narrow south pane. The balcony at the 5th floor has a glass railing, and the two south bays at the 5th floor angle back away from the street at the south end. The 6th floor remains parallel with the rest of the facade.
The north and south elevations are faced in dark-grey smooth-stucco, and the rear, east-facing elevation has projecting balconies wiht metal railings fronting large windows and glass French doors. The ground floor is occupied by Tacuba restaurant.
