 office building, commercial building

6-story postmodern office building completed in 1928. Designed by Jonathan. E. Nitchie, it was re-clad in 1987 with reddish granite on the upper floors, above a 2-story base of grey granite. The ground floor is banded with rounded stripes of black stone, while the 2nd floor has narrower, more closely-spaced bands. There is a double entrance in the center, with the left side for the ground-floor restaurant, and the right doorway for the upper floors. On either side is a window grouping, spaced between the horizontal bands, of eight small panes arranged as 2-over-4, with a metal vent at the bottom. Just inside of the top panes are four small decorative black tiles arranged in a square. The 2nd floor has two large windows in the center and smaller square windows in the end bays. A metal band separates the upper floors from the base.

The upper floors have two bays of large windows in the middle and slightly narrower windows in the end bays, all topped by black splayed stone lintels. At each floor, between the middle and end bays, are squares of four small glass blocks, similar to the tiles on the ground floor. The facade is crowned by a parapet that steps up toward the center, where there is a large triangular peak, with black stone coping. At the center of the parapet is a round medallion with the letters IATSE, for the Local One Union of Theatrical Stage Employees.

The Local One is the premier stagehand union of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (I.A.T.S.E). The organization represents the workers who construct, install, maintain, and operate the lighting and sound equipment, the scenery and special effects at Broadway shows, concerts at Radio City Music Hall, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall, productions at The Metropolitan Opera and throughout Lincoln Center, and the many entertaining broadcasts from CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, and PBS.

The ground floor is occupied by Frankie & Johnnie's restaurant, which opened as a speakeasy in 1926 at 269 West 45th Street, but didn't move to this location until 2016.
