commercial building, postmodern (architecture)
7-story commercial building originally completed in 1965 with six floors. The rather drab facade was completely remodeled in 2007 as the headquarters of NYGARD Fashions. The futuristic new facade of stainless and blue glass is divided into a narrower north section and wider south section. The north end has the main entrance on the ground floor, covered by a metal canopy, and four windows on each of the six floors above, divided by very narrow mullions. A projecting sign is attached to the very north end, running from the 2nd-7th floors, with large blue letters spelling out "NYGARD" on a metal frame.
The south section has two storefronts on the ground floor (the smaller one of plate-glass, the wider one with black polished granite framing the glass and metal door and show-windows). The 2nd floor has two wide show-windows, with a stainless steel column in the center. The 3rd-5th floors are similar, but mostly covered by a metal screen in the form of a giant "N", and blue light-up letters at the base of the 3rd floor spelling out "NYGARD". Beginning at the 6th floor, a large blue glass cylinder projects from recessed ends; a rounded metal canopy-like structure projects out from the top of the 6th floor, with the glass cylinder rising above, and ending in a tilted top. Bright blue neon lights bathe large sections of both the interior and exterior of the building.
NYGARD was founded in 1967 by designer Peter Nygard in Canada, and expanded into the US in 1978. The Nygård Fashions brands include Peter Nygård, Bianca Nygård, and Nygård Collection. Nygård Moderate also has three National Brands that are exclusively available at Dillard's in the US. The Broadway building houses offices, design studios, showrooms and entertainment venues.
The ground floor is occupied by Joe's Pizza & Pasta, and small souvenir shop.
