The Nicole (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / West 55th Street, 400
 high-rise, apartment building, 2004_construction

174-foot, 18-story modernist residential building completed in 2004. Designed by Costas Kondylis & Partners, it is clad in red and dark-grey brick. dark-grey metal, and glass. The ground floor is lined with dark-grey metal-and-glass storefronts, above a dark-grey stone water table, with the main entrance near the center, framed in rusticated white stone, extending up to break the band of red brick that caps the ground floor above the storefronts. The entrance has glass doors in a recessed bay, flanked by a smaller recessed bay with a metal service door on the left, and a similar bay with a vertical signboard at the right. The ground floor on 55th Street extends for three extra bays to the west in a 1-story section that has a landscaped terrace on top, enclosed by a metal railing above a white stone coping that runs along the entire ground floor.

To the east of this 1-story extension there is a low-rise section that ends at the 5th floor. The upper floors here, and at the main high-rise portion at the east end, have brick spandrels bands and piers, some in red brick and some in dark-grey. Exposed concrete floor plates delineate each story. The north facade spans 14 total bays of varying width across the 2nd-5th floors, with either tripartite windows or double-window variations. The windows wrap around the corners at both ends. The high-rise section begins above the center of the main entrance, and extends to the east end. From the 7th to the 13th floors, the brick spandrels do not extend to the two outer bays, instead having thinner, dark-grey metal spandrels. The north facade sets back above the 14th floor, and at the 15th-17th floors, the brick spandrels are again replaced by thinner metal ones at the outer two bays, with the brick resuming at the top floor. The high-rise portion spans seven bays on the north facade.

The east facade on the avenue, set back from the lot line, spans six bays, with the 2nd bay from the south having only a tripartite window, and the others having wider variations of double-window groups. The south facade is clad primarily in red brick, with exposed floor plates. It has four bays of single-windows in the middle of the high-rise portion, with a narrow window pane at each end where the corner windows wrap around. There are dark-grey brick spandrels between some of the floors, only within the single-window bays, and panels of dark-grey brick outside of the middle bays at the 14th & 18th floors.

The west elevation of the high-rise portion has similar cladding to the two main facades, as does the west elevation of the low-rise portion in the middle. The building contains 145 apartment units. The ground floor is occupied by Bluepearl Veterinary Specialists, Hells Kitchen Wines & Spirits, Bright Horizons kindergarten prep, and a Chase Bank branch.
