skyscraper, apartment building, 2016_construction
533-foot, 48-story postmodern residential building completed in 2016. Designed by The Stephen B. Jacobs Group, it is very similar to the slightly taller apartment tower to the north at 160 West 62nd, which was built just a couple years earlier. Both are clad in beige brick and silver glass, with windows wrapping around the corners.
The Encore has a 2-story base, with grey granite at the bases of the piers. Each of the four facades spans five bays, with the main entrance is the center of the south facade on 60th Street. A glass revolving door between two traditional glass doors, set in a glass wall, opens into a 17-foot-high lobby with limestone walls and a bronze architectural relief. The middle three bays have double-height openings, with the glass infill extending up through the 2nd floor. The center bay is wider than the two flanking it, all three of which have their glass walls recessed within the openings. Small stone planter boxes front the glass in the two flanking bays. The end bays has double-windows, very tall on the ground floor, with grey metal louvers at the top. A simplified cornice caps the base. The five bays along Amsterdam Avenue all match, with the exception of the northern bay's ground floor, where there are two glass-and-metal doors. The rest of the openings have tripartite windows on both floors, again with metal louvers at the tops of the ground-floor openings. Green copper and glass light fixtures are attached to each pier - except the end piers.
The upper floors on the south facade have eight bays, with tripartite windows in the middle two, followed by double-windows in the next two bays on either side, and end bays with triple-windows wrapping around the corners. At the end bays, the windows are floor-to-ceiling, with only thin metal spandrels between each floor. Metal air-conditioning vents are located below the windows in the center bays and those next to the end bays.
The west facades has three center bays of tripartite windows, and end bays like those on the south facade, except with four narrower panes instead of three wider ones. The middle bays all have vents below the windows, and there are beige concrete floor plates between each floor, running just above the windows. The east facade is identical, except for having the 3-pane style of end-bay windows. The north facade has four middle bays, each with four window panes, and the end bays have the 4-pane configuration. The brick of the piers and spandrels below the top floor, which has a solid band of windows around all four facades. The roof line is marked by a simple stone cornice, and a tall, metal-clad mechanical housing rises from the center of the roof.
The building contains 258 apartment units.
