Swan's Market is located in the Old Oakland district of Downtown Oakland. The market was built in 1917, designed by the architectural firm of Oliver and Thomas, and expanded from 1925-1940. it was originally called the 10th Street Market and was also known as the Oakland Free Market or Sanitary Free Market. In 2001 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is now a mixed use commercial and residential block that holds the Museum of Children’s Art, the historic Housewives Market and a variety of shops and food markets.
