Former Mare Island Naval Shipyard

USA / California / Vallejo /
shipyard, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, closed / former military, United States Navy, historic district, U.S. National Historic Landmark

A major west coast shipbuilding & repair facility for the US Navy from 1854-1996, this yard, along with the yard in Bremerton WA, saw extensive use during the WWII as the repair facility for ships damaged by the Japanese. The Navy has since decomissioned the facility and several plans are in the works for the site, however, like many industrial sites the ground is most likely highly contaminated with heavy metals and asbestos. The shipyard is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
