Parel is a neighbourhood situated in Central Part of Mumbai.

Parel was one of the original seven islands that formed Mumbai. It belonged to the 13th century kingdom of Raja Bhimdev. When the Portuguese conquered Bombay, they gave the authority of this area to the Jesuit priests, which were later confiscated by the British.

Under the British rule Parel was one of the poshest localities of Mumbai. It housed the Governor's residence, Parel Government House. Several rich people called Parel home. It was not until the mills started showing up in the vicinity, and Parel was crowded by mill workers, that the Governor shifted his residence to Malbar Point. The rich abandoned Parel an it was left for the poor.

Though today once again Parel has become one of the most expensive localities in Mumbai. The mills in and around Parel have been replaced by many luxury residential complexes and state of the art commercial buildings. It also has a five star hotel, the ITC Grand Central.

It has many Hospitals viz, KEM Hospital, Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Wadia Maternity and Childrens Hospital, Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Bachooali Eye Hospital, Parel Hospital and also a Animal Hospital run by BSPCA including Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital.
