  • Yes indeed, this is Parel Workshop of the Central Railways, previously known as the Great Indian Peninsular Railway (GIP) and the locality was then known as Parel-GIP as opposed to Lower Parel. The residents of this area were those who toiled in the railways workshop or in one of the many textile mills that dotted Parel, Lower Parel, and Lalbaug. The chawls built here were dingy places meant to shelter the mill workers. Ironically, the people who helped raise the economy of Bombay hence the country, themselves had to eke it out in opressive conditions. But that was another day. Today Parel is chalked out to become an up-market locality.
  • This is one of the really old loco workshops earlier specialized in POH facilities of 1.5 kV DC locos at that time. The NDM and ZDM locos from Neral - Matheran are brought here for mantainence. Also for some of the heavy duty railway service cranes cming from outside sectors.
