The Synagogue is one of the most interesting and least popular archaeological sites in Plovdiv, situated in the Northeastern part of the ancient city.
According to the archaeological researches the beginning of the construction of the Synagogue dates back to the first half of 3rd century AD. It is followed by several renovations, the last one – from the beginning of 5th century (M. Martinova).
Two mosaic floors were found, located one over another. The mosaics were created with great craftsmanship and rich colours. The purpose of the building is determined by the floor mosaic. The images are symbolic for the Jewish community - menorah and palm branch (lulab). Four lines of inscriptions in Greek are of great interest. They provide evidence for the names of the donors - representatives of the numerous Jewish community in Ancient Plovdiv.
The Synagogue is the only religious building of its kind from that period, found in Bulgaria. It is a testimony to the cosmopolitanism of Philippopolis in the Antiquity with inhabitants of different ethnicities and beliefs.
