Bachevo

Bulgaria / Blagoevgrad / Razlog /

The village of Bachevo is situated at the foot of the Rila mountain, 4 km away from the town of Razlog and 6 km from Bansko, in the north-western part of the Razlojka valley. Its altitude is 920 m. The village celebrates Saint Todor's day with special festivals since time immemorial. This celebration is also known as "Horse Easter", where a liturgy is officiated in the village square, horses are foddered and songs and sung. Then a traditional horse race known as "Peasant Kushia" is held in the area of "Vlasovitza".

6 km to the north of Bachevo is found the picturesque and well known site of Perivol, which name is Persian origin and means "beautiful view". In this breath taking site there are ruins from a Roman settlement from 1st century AD. From the high rock of "Gergyova skala" one gets a bird eye view of the whole valley (da ima snimka ot krysta). Legend has it that in the early days of Christianity Saint George lived in those places and protected the locals. Persecuted for his piety he raced through the forest coming right up on the edge of the precipice of the actual Paraclis of "Gergyova skala" and God send him a horse with wings to save him. Until this day hoof imprints believed to be those of St. George's horse, can be discerned on the rock.
