St. Athanasius Monastery (Burgas)

Bulgaria / Burgas / Burgas
 monastery, Bulgarian Orthodox Church

The St. Athanasius Church is located in Izgrev and is one of the most emblematic buildings in the city. The patron-saint of the church is St. Athanasiy. He is one of the most eminent theologians and champions of the purity of Christian faith. For such deeds, he was exalted in early Christianity as the Great. He is honoured by all Christians. Legend says that he went to the mountain, riding a white horse and wearing a silk shirt, and shouted Go away winter, come in summer! Together with his brother, Saint Anton, they used to be blacksmiths. St. Anton and St. Atanas’s Days are celebrated as seasonal holidays – in January. The two saints are patron-saints of blacksmiths, leatherworkers, farriers and ironmongers.
