Purple People Bridge

USA / Kentucky / Newport /
 truss bridge, pedestrian area, footbridge

The Newport Southbank Bridge, popularly known as the "Purple People Bridge", opened in 1872 as the Newport and Cincinnati Bridge, the first Ohio River railroad crossing at Cincinnati. In 1904, the bridge was renamed the L&N (Louisville and Nashville) Railroad Bridge, and remained so until the bridge was restored and re-opened in May 2003 as a pedestrian-only bridge.

It is without a doubt Cincinnati's most eccentric bridge, with remnants of a half-dozen major modifications still visible today. In 2001 it was heavily modified once again, restored at a cost of $4 million and painted purple reopening in 2003 as a pedestrian-only bridge. In the future it is planned to carry a street car or more substantial mass transit line to Newport, so its evolution will continue.
