City Centre Precincts (Cardiff)

United Kingdom / Wales / Cardiff
 pedestrian area, invisible, city centre

Much of the former street area in the Cardiff city central core, which was shared at street level in a traditional manner between heavy retail and commercial pedestrian and vehicle traffic, has in recent years been subject to full pedestrianization instead. The overall City Centre redevelopment and improvement strategic policies of the City Council stress "Improving the pedestrian environment" as one of its top ten strategic challenges. The following description is set out in the City Council's City Centre Strategy 2007-2010 see @ (p.36) :

"The Central Core area is the primary shopping location, containing several major department stores, three covered shopping centres and many high street chain stores. Much of the area is pedestrianised with prime locations attracting a pedestrian flow in excess of 8,000 people per hour. The area’s primary retail role needs to be complemented by other facilities and strong links to major attractions in the city centre such as Cardiff Castle and the National Museum of Wales. The redevelopment of the St. David’s Centre will bring major improvements to the southern side of the city centre with the opening of the first John Lewis store in Wales and the new Central library acting as catalysts to further investment and enhancement opportunities."
