Hamilton County is dominated by the city of Cincinnati, which is also it's seat. It was named for Alexander Hamilton, one of the US's founding fathers and the country's first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton County was established as the Northwest Territories' second county in 1790 (after Washington County).

Most of the county is urban or suburban. It shares a border with Kentucky along the Ohio River.
