Spruce Island is located across Narrow Strait from the northeast corner of Kodiak Island, Alaska.
Most of the 200 residents of the island live in Ouzinkie, the island's only village located on the northwestern tip. There is also a Russian Orthodox Monastery on the southern part of the island.
From 1808 to 1818, Spruce Island was the hermitage of Herman of Alaska, later sainted and considered the patron saint of the Orthodox Church in the Americas.
