trailhead, historic ruins

Dutton was a small camp at the head of Cottonwood Bay run by George Dutton in the 1900's-1910's. It consisted of a dock, store and post office that was established in 1905.
Dutton created the site as a supply point for the Ilianmi and Lake Clarke area. There was
monthly steamer service via the "Dora" from Valdez. A rough trail ran from the Dutton site to Lake Iliamna, cutting over 1,000 miles from the route from Cook inlet to Bristol Bay.
