Built in 1796 by James Blackwell, the Blackwell farmhouse is the oldest building on Roosevelt Island. It is the last remnant of a time when Roosevelt Island was owned by private individuals rather than the city. The Blackwell family owned and farmed the island from the late 1600s until 1828, when it was sold to the city. After the city took over the island, the house was used as quarters for various administrators.
