SS Great Britain Monument (Stanley)

Falkland Islands / Port Stanley / Stanley
 monument, ship, memorial plaque

Mizzen Mast of the SS Great Britain, an Isambard Kingdom Brunel-designed passenger steamship built in 1843-1845 for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York.

The largest ship in the world at the time of her maiden voyage, the Great Britain was the first iron-hulled steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic which she did in 1845, in the time of 14 days. Converted to sail in 1881, the vessel arrived at Stanley in 1884 where her aging hull led to her retirement from sailing service and sale to the Falkland Islands Company for use as a floating warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk until being scuttled in 1937.

Raised and returned to Britain in 1970, the SS Great Britain was painstakingly restored and is now a museum ship in Bristol Harbour.
