Fin Feather Lake was built by the Houston & Texas Central Railroad in the late 1800's. The lake was either a borrow pit from which sands and clays were mined for track construction or, it may have also had the purpose of alleviating flood conditions in the south Hearne area.
The lake has had three names; originally named by the railroad (1876) and subsequently renamed by a sporting club in the early 1900's or late 1800's. It was ultimately renamed to Fin Feather Lake, after the Fin Feather Road. Fin Feather Road had become well known due to the presence of The Cotton Poison Company which, due to sloppy and careless management, polluted the lake with arsenic and made it toxic. A massive cleanup effort took place and the lake was pronounced "safe" in 2008 or 2009.
