Addicks Reservoir is situated on the north side of Interstate 10 and extends just north of Clay Road, between Barker-Cypress Road to the west and the Sam Houston Tollway to the east; Texas State Highway 6 bisects the reservoir from north to south.

The reservoir, Addicks Dam and nearby Barker Reservoir were built to prevent downstream flooding of Buffalo Bayou in the city of Houston. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the reservoir was authorized under the Rivers and Harbors Act of June 20, 1938 (modified by the Flood Control Acts of August 11, 1938; September 3, 1954; and October 27, 1965).

Several recreational parks are scattered throughout the reservoir, including Bear Creek Pioneers Park, Bear Creek Golf World and the Archer Bark Park.
