This was the nuclear weapons storage and assembly area, commonly known as the "Q Site" for Carswell. See www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/facility/q_area-intro.htm for more information. Note, the actual boundaries of this site are only approximate, and based on the visible site features and the perimeter road.

An underground tunnel is/was rumored to exist between this area and Carswell Air Force Base to the East.

At the Weapons Storage Area (WSO) a removal action consisting of scabbling concrete to remove low-level radiation from a bunker was conducted. Radiation was intended to be removed to background levels. However, some residual remains. The final recommendation will likely be to leave the residual contamination in place with no further removal, but with a use restriction on the contaminated bunker to prevent unsafe exposure. • In the 1980's this facility was used for BDU-38 renovation. A BDU (Bomb, Dummy Unit) - 38 is a parachute retarded weapon simulating a nuke. They build up these things, painted white and re-install the parachute and an explosive cartridge. The cartridge is a huge shotgun shell silver device known as a CCU-11/B. Carswell isn't the only base renovating the -38's, even TAC bases (F-16) used these. I have no knowledge of any tunnels, but it's not the biggest stretch to imagine as they used to convoy the live weapons from White Settlement to Carswell in the 1970's (or so I'm told).
