Fort Armistead was named July 13, 1899 in honor of the late Major George Armistead, Corps of Artillery, brevetted lieutenant colonel for gallant conduct while in command of Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland, in the sucessful defense of that post against attack of the British fleet under Admiral Cochrane on September 13 and 14, 1814, and whose steadfast bravery on this occasion saved the city of Baltimore from capture, and was the inspiration of Francis Scott Key in the composition of the patriotic words of the national air, "The Star Spangled Banner."

This site on Hawkins Point was originally indended to be fortified by the Third System of fortifications mounting 131 guns.
It was eventually fortified as part of the Endicott System beginning in 1896. In 1928 the US Army closed the fort.
It consisted of Batteries Winchester, McFarland, Irons, Mudge. It is now a Baltimore City park
