Beginning operations in 1891 as part of the Maryland Steel Co, this shipyard would go on to be a prolific builder and scrapper of merchant and military vessels for the next 95 years. When all shipbuilding ceased at the site in 1986 due to the slumping US Economy and disappearance of US shipping lines, the yard became a dedicated ship repair facility which continued until 1997 when the yard was sold by Bethlehem Steel to private interests. Ownership of the yard changed hands several times in the late 1990s and early 2000's, before the ship repair business officially folded in 2003.

A final owner bought the large graving dock and surrounding facilities in 2003 and briefly operated a MARAD scrapyard from the location, but the company folded in 2004 the yard went idle again. Presently the entire yard has been bought by Barletta Industries and has been partially modernized to handle barge construction and ship repair.
