Established 18 July 1917. Designated in honor of Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, commanding general, Army of the Potomac, 1863–65. Designated as a National Army cantonment for the mobilization of the 79th Division in World War I. Redesignated as Fort Leonard Wood on 2 March 1928 and as Fort George G. Meade on 25 February 1929.

Formerly the home to the Headquarters, 7th Division from 1920 to 1921, the Headquarters, 16th Infantry Brigade from 1924 to 1926 and 1936 to 1940, the Headquarters, 1st Tank Group from 1921 to 1929, the Headquarters, Mechanized Force from 1928 to 1931, the 17th Infantry from 1919 to 1920, the 41st Infantry from 1920 to 1921, the 12th Infantry, less 2nd Battalion from 1919 to 1922, the 34th Infantry from 1934 to 1940, the 16th Tank Battalion from 1921 to 1929, the 17th Tank Battalion from 1921 to 1929, the 1st Tank Regiment, less 2nd and 3rd Battalions from 1929 to 1932, the 2nd Battalion, 2d Tank Regiment from 1929 to 1932, the 66th Infantry, less 2nd and 3rd Battalions from 1932 to 1940, the 8th Tank Company, and elements of 8th Quartermaster Regiment.
