Perched on top of Mount Diablo's Summit Building is the beacon, dubbed by locals as the "Eye of Diablo", from the former Standard Diablo airway beacon installed in 1928. It could be seen over 100 miles away and was first lit by Charles Lindbergh. On December 7, 1941, the beacon was turned off so it could not be used as a guide for night attacks.

After construction of the Summit Building was completed, it was donated by Standard Oil in 1942. It quickly fell into disrepair after the war ended until it was restored by Pearl Harbor survivors in 1964. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander in Chief of Pacific Forces during World War II, relit the beacon in 1964 for the first time and suggested it be lit every December 7th to honor those who served and sacrificed. The Eye of Diablo is lit every December 7th from sunset until dawn in memory of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
