Fake Freeway for "The Matrix Reloaded" (Alameda, California) | interesting place, movie / film / TV location

Created on runways of the decommissioned Alameda Naval Air Station for filming the freeway chase scene in the movie Matrix Reloaded. A nearby tunnel, the Webster tube was also used.

  • Yes the fake freeway was constructed here complete with load bearing overpasses.
  • There were high walls lining the freeway, to hide San Francisco. Distant images of the city were placed where the creators wanted then to be, as opposed to seeing the existing cityscape. The walls were quite similar to the acoustic barriers that many present-day freeways have now, so the constructed walls did not seem out of place.
  • I added a few on-ramps and off-ramps that were marked and used in the movie. I am looking to see if I can tell just where the overpasses were built. In the movie, the freeway was exactly realistic. Indistinguishable from the real thing. With 3(4?) lanes in each direction.
  • the scenes with the Caddilac SUV were added later as this was something nobody would see for a while.
