One storey, 167,498 sq. ft. industrial building, formerly the home of Canadian Admiral and now occupied by several tenants including Saxco and Bike Zone.
Canadian Admiral Corporation
In 1934, the Continental Radio & Television Company was established in Chicago, Illinois. At the end of WWII, after a name change, the company began manufacturing radio and television sets under the Admiral brand name. By the early 1950's, along with Dumont and Philco, it became one of the leading television producers in the US.
In 1946, Admiral established a Canadian operation, in temporary quarters, firstly in Lakeview and later in Malton. In 1951 it constructed a new plant at 501 Lakeshore Road East to service the Canadian market. It was the first factory in Canada to produce television sets. With 250 employees, the plant started making radios, phonographs and black and white televisions at a rate of 25,000 televisions and 50,000 radios a year.
By 1961, employment rose to over 750 and the plant started to manufacture refrigerators as well as television sets. Colour TV production commenced in 1963, however, because of quality problems and foreign competition from Japanese manufacturers, the colour TV division was closed in 1977 resulting in the laying off of 300 employees.
The plant continued to make refrigerators until 1981, when Admiral, which had been purchased by Rockwell International in 1974, went bankrupt. Acquired and re-opened by Inglis in 1982, the plant continued with the production of refrigerators. Inglis was bought by Whirlpool in 1987 which closed the plant in 1991
