Cawthra Park Secondary School was opened in 1972 with a swimming pool added in 1975. Following the Province`s decision to fully fund seperate schools, there was a large decline in the number of students attending Cawthra Park. In order to attract students a performing arts program was instituted in 1981.

Programs in the visual arts, music and drama were added and made available to all students throughout Mississauga. Existing facilities were converted to provide two new dance studios. Following the success of the arts program now known as the Regional Arts Program (RAP) of the Peel District School Board, a similar facility was established in Brampton and the catchment area for the Cawthra Park program was limited to those areas south of the 401.

The school presently has an enrollment of approximately 1,300 students.
