This bar, located at 240 Bourbon Street, was built in 1809 and is said to have been where Jackson and Jean Lafitte secretly met to plan defense strategies for the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. It was a speakeasy during prohibition until the feds closed it down. There was another bar at 400 Bourbon which was also called The Olde Absinthe House, but has since been renovated (much to our sorrow) and turned into a brightly-lit daquiri shop. It is unclear which one of these was the real (original) absinthe house. The drink (absinthe) was outlawed in the early 20th century but has recently become available once again.
