This project is owned and operated by NovaGold Resources Inc and Teck, each with a 50% interest. As of 2011 it is on care and maintenance and more engineering and evaluation work was done in 2010 for consideration of alternative plant site and tailings locations. As of 2014 NovaGold was considering selling a portion of their share, or all of it in order concentrate on Donlin Creek.
The Galore Creek property comprises 118,900 hectares (293,840 acres) of British Columbia mineral claims located within Tahltan Nation territory. NovaGold and Teck have completed a number of optimization studies with the objective of expanding throughput, relocating the project facilities to allow for easier construction and future expansion, and reducing the risks associated with construction and operations. Significant changes to the original design include: increasing throughput to potentially 90,000 tonnes per day, a 40% increase from the original design; realigning the tunnel and access road; relocating the tailings facility to allow for construction of a conventional tailings dam; and relocating the processing facilities to allow for future expansion.
Galore Creek is a large, good-grade copper-gold-silver porphyry deposit. The current resource estimate includes 786 million tonnes of measured and indicated resource grading 0.5% copper and 0.3 g/t gold, with an additional inferred resource of 411 million tonnes grading 0.4% copper and 0.3 g/t gold. The majority of this resource is contained within two deposits on the property, Central and Bountiful. Sampling and drilling in other areas of the property have identified additional deposits and exploration targets, and NovaGold believes there remains significant potential to expand the existing resources.
