This is where 28 year old nuclear worker Karen Silkwood was killed when her car ran off the road on November 13, 1974. After a union meeting in Crescent, OK, Silkwood was en route south to the Oklahoma City Holiday Inn to meet with a union official and a New York Times reporter. She was meeting with them to present them with documentation which would allegedly prove that her company Kerr-McGee was falsifying plutonium quality control reports. Many speculate that Silkwood's car was bumped and forced off the left side of the road by company officials who were trying to stop or scare her. Silkwood crossed the median, drove off the road and onto the left shoulder, then drove over the north concrete culvert. Her car was briefly airborne before landing on the opposite side and smashing head-on into the south concrete culvert. She was killed instantly. The documents Silkwood had with her were not found at the accident scene.
